When we were up in Scotland on the secret project, we met a lovely horse called Harley. Harley is owned by Tanya and she very kindly gave us permission to work with Harley and film the behind-the-scenes of an equine mini-session photoshoot. In this blog post are two videos but only MTog’s get to see the second one with the entire shoot and the full edit, so if you aren’t an MTog, you might want to head here first.
The video for a BTS of one shot is here:
You can see in the video above that I’m mostly in full control of what is happening to ensure we get beaut outcomes. Harley was a superstar but it was difficult to get him to put his ears forwards! The treat tub was the only way so Dan did have to put the filming camera down to go focus on that!
The rest of this topic is for the members inside the MTog Vault, so if you aren’t an MTog yet you should probably check it out!
Regarding the question about directing owner and horse to pose…I would have to say yes and no. I haven’t done a horse shoot (would love to one day though!) BUT I would say I can use the advice you gave the owner with dogs and their owners for sure. I did a shoot this morning and thought about telling them more specifically to move one way or to have the body facing one way or the head turning another. Really helped me to better compose in camera too! So YES!! This was very helpful!! (PS…I know you’ve said all this many many times but sometimes one needs to hear it many times for it to sink in!)
oh…and the only thing I think you could do better is put a camera on Dan so we can watch his morning calisthenics! 🙂
Great shoot and edit….what a stunning location. A dark edit would be great to see, and as Lynn has mentioned above, perhaps a short video on masking a smaller area to enable the tidy up of the mane would be useful. I always struggle with that. Thanks again Jess
This is absolutely stunning! Wonderful edit, thank you. I would love to see the darkened edit too if that was possible. Thank you again
More amazing shooting and editing! Thank you for sharing with us! I was wondering if you could go over those quick steps to mask just a portion of a subject to remove something like you did with Harley’s mane. I have the feeling that comes in handy fairly often!
Such a beautiful shot and just beautifully edited, I would love to see the darken edit also if that’s possible
