Equine Photography online course?
Check out the summary of each Unit, plus what is covered below in Jess’ own words.

All about Unit 1:
Core
Unit 1 is a non-negotiable must watch. You can’t enrol in any of the other modules without having this one there first. It doesn’t contain any shooting or retouching, which does make it the odd one out.
It includes 17 lessons, all containing vital things that you must know, which conveniently fit into two sections, Equine 101 and Equine Photography 101.
The sub-sections of this unit are:
Your Title Goes Here
Equine 101
This section contains seven lessons that ensure every single student is fully prepared for working with horses. It’s here that we look at traditionally “boring” things like health & safety, alongside much more interesting things like equine behaviour, types of client, handling, and core terminology too.
Equine Photography 101
This section contains eleven info-packed lessons that share some well-known principles of equine photography alongside some silent and unwritten rules that you kind of have to “know to know”.
And know you will! (Cryptic, yes.)
This Unit includes the following digital asset as standard:
All about Unit 2:
Black Background
A must-have top-tier favourite in the wider equestrian photography genre, and one that is incredibly easy to shoot even if you don’t have oodles of fancy equipment – Black Background portraiture sits as a great entry path into the genre.
It’s not easy to perfect though, and most photographers really struggle with settings, poses and client preparation. Whether you just can’t get the in-camera part right, or you’re finding retouching an absolute nightmare, this module has the answers!
The sub-sections of this unit are:
Your Title Goes Here
Theory
Everything you need to know, prepare, purchase (or thrift/borrow), write into your session guides and research on Google Maps lives in this handy group of lessons.
You also get an incredibly helpful Posing Guide PDF to download and take with you on your photoshoots.
Shooting
To cover all bases here, we go out and shoot two different horses in two different locations.
Crucially, we’re going to be shooting, and later comparing, a “perfect” black background location to a not-so-great location. The latter will provide ample fuel for…
Retouching
There’s a meaty retouching section for this module. We start with base edits (global adjustments to get you super close to where you need to be for workflows), before working through which images would be best for clients in picking and culling.
Next, we dive in with a couple of different full edit tutorials, showing how you can handle the major issues that come with this style of work. Trust me, there’s quite a few!
You also get some extra bonuses in here too, with downloadable actions, overlays and Photoshop brushes worth £80.
This Unit includes the following digital assets as standard:
All about Unit 3:
Studio Photography
This unit is all about photographing horses properly with off camera flash (specifically studio strobes, but you can use a speedlight or 3 if you need to).
The reason this module was included is to provide technically and classically correct photography education for equine studio portraiture.
It’s a complete myth that you can’t photograph horses with flash, and after proper desensitisation and careful introduction, the horses quickly prefer being “on-set” to being off. I have 3 horses who are living proof of this principle – they love it!
The sub-sections of this unit are:
Your Title Goes Here
Flash Theory
This theory section is a little bit meatier, because there is a LOT to get through. It’s not going to replace self learning along with trial and error on using your own lights (if you don’t have some already, you can get a kit list for shopping inside this course!).
However, it will get you up and running, give you correct terminology AND help you know how to troubleshoot issues that you might have with your own artificial lights whilst in the field (or barn, or arena).
To help with the transition into the land of Studio, there’s a couple of helper PDFs to download; a Glossary and a Kit List.
Shooting Theory
Everything you need to know, prepare, write into your session guides and research lives in this handy group of lessons. We cover general photoshoot planning to lighting patterns, posing and more.
You also get a downloadable pattern and posing guide, which means you have a map for your studio set, with where to put everything including the horse, handler, attention person, all your lights and you, for every single pose you see in this section, and then some!
Shooting
As well as setting up at a hired indoor location, this section includes two totally different desensitisation examples (a non-reaction and an “OH NO” reaction). We work through this incredibly important part of shooting horses with flash, and end up with super confident subjects who can’t get enough of the studio!
We shoot three horses in two different locations to run through your lighting patterns, set ups and shooting situations on the fly.
Retouching
There’s a large retouching section for this module too with a couple of different full edit workflows covering different issues you might need to solve.
You get a range of downloadable bonuses in here too, with actions, overlays and Photoshop brushes worth £80.
This Unit includes the following digital assets as standard:
All about Unit 4:
Event Photography
I really do feel like this sub-genre has a bad rep, and it shouldn’t. I’ve purchased hundreds of photographs from event photographers – competitors need you!
When you spend so much time training and then preparing and transporting your horse to an event (not to mention the cost!), it’s so wonderful to have a visual memento of the day.
With this module you’ll be ready to go out and shoot your first event, process the images quickly and efficiently, get them online with a few clicks and start making some money.
The sub-sections of this unit are:
Your Title Goes Here
Theory
Event work is a totally different kettle of fish compared to portraiture, and it needs its own area to cover the vital theory. By its very nature, event photography needs to appeal to the competitors most, so we spend time discussing that, alongside a range of other things you absolutely need to know!
You also get a downloadable PDF guide on paces/gaits and moments that sell best. That’s helpful to have handy before we head into…
Shooting
You join us to shoot a very real full-day event (don’t worry, you don’t have to watch the whole 8 hours of us working in the rain, or in the indoor arena either!). You do, however, get to watch how first and second shooters work together and the core principles of covering shows and competitions.
The event conveniently contains a wide variety of elements from trot ups, conformation appraisals, mares with foals at foot, loose schooling and jumping, along with in hand and ridden showing.
Our demonstration event is in English tack, but never fear, the principles all apply to Western classes too. We shoot both indoors and outdoors.
Retouching
Retouching for event work is totally different to private portraiture, and this section covers everything you need to know to maintain efficiency and still deliver good products. We discuss exporting and plugin-led uploads to online galleries in here too, and a brief look at after-sales usage so you can think ahead in real time.
This Unit includes the following digital asset as standard:
All about Unit 5:
Outdoor Portrait
Whilst equine posing out in nature is something we cover inside Module 5, a large portion of time is spent looking at posing options for horses and their humans, because this is where a large chunk of earning potential lives.
Before you have a panic at the thought of having to pose a human being, don’t. You’ll get some helpful tips and watch me explain everything to, and pose, multiple people!
This module also includes “free” shooting on-location, to make the horse look as though they are loose, but they are safely under control at all times.
The sub-sections of this unit are:
Your Title Goes Here
Theory
Here we discuss a lot of outdoor specific elements involved in portraiture sessions, including equipment you need to have on hand and various safety factors to note. There is some cross over to canine work outdoors, but in woodlands specifically there are a number of extra considerations that make things tricky!
We’ll discuss posing and people, as well as location specific factors you absolutely have to prepare for. You also get a downloadable PDF posing guide, which means you have everything you need to go out and get shooting!
Shooting
Starting with location scouting, we explore the hardest of all location types to shoot horses in – a woodland/forest – and assess the value of different forest sections before deciding on a path for the client.
Next, we go out and shoot! The core behind the scenes is an entire end-to-end with Olivia (14yo) & Dusty, her horse. These two are a great example of photographing equines in woodlands and the location scouting pointers are proved true and correct! There are also two very special behind the scenes clips from other photoshoots, to cover some additional poses and their application.
Every photo you see in this pink box here is photographed in the shooting section of this course.
You have everything you need here for any location!
Retouching
As you’d expect, there’s a very large retouching section for this module with four full edit tutorials, 3 of which include human specific retouching, plus backlight handling!
You’ll have the opportunity to download a range of tools here including a handy helper action, plus some useful overlays & Photoshop brushes.
This Unit includes the following digital assets as standard:
All about Unit 6:
Brand/Commercial & Documentary
If you know how to work a camera and you like shooting a variety of different things, you simply HAVE to consider this line of work!
Honestly, I enjoy shooting both brand shoots and commercial stuff so much. It’s amazing to be able to go do our thing (shooting!), whilst watching another allied equine professional doing their thing, and then be able to provide them with wonderful imagery for their business.
It’s sort of an obvious option, but in the equine world, professional photography for businesses is a largely untapped market that has a huge amount of earning potential. It’s also absolutely fantastic for networking and gathering up a whole host of new private session clients too!
The sub-sections of this unit are:
Your Title Goes Here
Theory
As the module name suggests, this unit covers two similar but slightly different types of work: brand shoots and commercial photography! Here we discuss different types of this sub-genre, including where it verges into documentary, and why each is worth taking seriously.
Each type of work carries different requirements, different needs and different execution plans, as well as potentially different permits and licensing too!
Shooting
There is no one size fits all for brand or commercial work, and you’ll be totally governed by the situation, shoot focus and the weather, so you’ll join me on an “event track”, for a professional rider/trainer taking a young horse off-property for his first ever event, and a standard brand shoot for a farrier on a tricky yard.
This gives oooooodles of ammunition for…
Retouching
A very varied and tricky set of images to work with, we run through the full image libraries to work out what to pick, what to cull and how on earth to bring them all together as one cohesive unit before exporting them out for next-day delivery, ready to be promptly plastered all over social media, as per usual!
^ all of this chaos is normal on commercial jobs, so it meets the unit brief 100%.

Is there a monthly payment option?
This depends on where you’re based and if you already have a currency set up in a Klarna or Clearpay/Afterpay account. Both of these providers are connected to our payment processor and the option to pay monthly, later, or in 12 months time is displayed automatically at checkout if you’re eligible.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept any other payment type than the ones shown on the checkout page of the Courses website at enrolment.
I forgot to add a discount code. Can I apply it afterwards?
Unfortunately not, as the checkout process is a closed loop that we can’t amend before, during, or after your journey through it.
Please ensure you have your code(s) ready to use and make sure they’re showing at the checkout stage before you press go!
I don't know horses, is this a step too far?
No. Whether you know horses already or not, you can use this course to end up shooting beautiful work yourself. In fact, the content has been tested by one-to-one students (our course guinea pigs) already, with a mixture or those who did and didn’t have experience around horses.
In fact, one of these students even did two IPS sessions from client mini-sessions we covered for both Black Background and Outdoor work, resulting in actual cash dollar, and then came along and shot the event module with us.
It works.
How do the modules work?
This course exists primarily because ad-hoc equine resources lack the absolutely vital theory that is needed to complete these session types safely. Therefore, the Core module ticks this box for us, keeping everyone as safe as they can be, whilst sharing very helpful equine & client information in one place.
The other modules, 2 through 6, cover different types of equine photography. Not everyone will want to learn how to shoot horses with studio flash, and similarly, not everyone will want to do commercial work. To cover all bases whilst still allowing you full choice, these units are all optional.
Simply add what you want to cover and go learn – it’s all there for when you want it!
How long do I get access for and can I extend this?
Access to the lessons is set at a specific length of 12 months by default. We would recommend taking your time to work through the lessons and practice each topic before moving on, but schedule time into your week to complete the content.
Extensions are not permitted for this course as standard, but you can get lifetime access connected to an MTog membership if you need additional time.
How is the content delivered? Can I download the videos?
The lessons are delivered as videos that are viewable on any device. All video content is in Ultra HD 4k format, hosted securely away from this website for page speed reasons. The average file size of a lesson on this website is around 10GB and therefore downloading video content is not an option.
Some lessons have supporting downloads which are marked clearly with a large button, as well as a brief description of what you are downloading. These downloads are as small as we can make them. Please be patient, they will transfer!
Can I access the lessons in any order?
The first time you work through the courses, you will need to follow the order provided. This is because the content was created to be delivered in that order, and future lessons will refer to things in previous lessons.
After you have completed a lesson once, you can go back to it at any time, in any order.
Do I have to sign up within a specific time frame?
No – this is not a time-bound enrolment. You can enrol for the course at any time, but any discount codes are likely to be time-restricted. The deadline for the code, if you have one, will be where you found the code (for example, in an email).
Is there a Book for this course?
Sadly not this time!
We love our Book collection but for this course with its 6 different modules, there would be so much repeated, yet so much we couldn’t share at the same time! That’s why we went with the downloadable guide and Core module plan instead, to make sure everything was where it needed to be at the right time for all students.
I don't use Photoshop / Lightroom. Can I still join in?
Absolutely. The retouching for each module is carried out in either Photoshop or Lightroom Classic, or both, and as long as you’re confident finding the workarounds for each step in the programs you use, you can make this work!
I need more help. How do I speak to a person?
We’ve got you. Team Tog is on hand to help with queries and any issues.
If you have questions that aren’t answered on this page, email us:
- [email protected] goes straight into our team helpdesk where someone will scoop you up to assist.
- [email protected] is our general mailbox.
- MTogs can also send a direct message to Team Tog in the MTog Vault.
Access Duration
The access duration for this course is set at 12 months.
Why? Read on…
Access to the lessons is set by default and by design – there is current scientific research displaying a strong correlation between learning deadlines and completion, retention and mastery. Self-management is crucial and even with a busy life or a time-pressured day job, if you prepare for our online courses, you’ll have enough time to complete the sessions plus practical assignments too.
We would recommend taking your time to work through the lessons and practise each topic before moving on but also to schedule learning time in your diary to ensure you remain committed to working through your enrolled content.
We know this is a hotly debated topic in the online learning world, but for Jess as a science nerd, following the data is vital. So far a grand total of 0.3% of our total student enrolments have got stuck on the access length. We’re here to help though, so read on…
If at the end of the default access length, you feel that you need more time, just send us an email and we’ll sort that out as soon as possible – there is no charge for extending however extensions are for 3 months only and can only be applied once.
That being said, you can get lifetime access connected to an MTog membership if you need additional time. If you are an MTog already, you can request to have course access extended at any time, for any reason (you don’t need to tell us). Simply send an email to [email protected] to get the process moving. We’ll action it as fast as possible!

As others have already mentioned, if we’ve been shooting horses for years you’ll still learn new things in this module! Tons of information for those who haven’t photographed horses before, and also tidbits for those in the field to elevate their game. I look forward to the next module

Helen Lamb (verified owner) – March 12, 2026 | Unit 1: Core
The Core unit of the Equine Photography course is a great introduction to the world of equines – whether you’ve never had much to do with horses before, or like me, you’ve been involved with horses for nearly 50 years! It covers all bases, from behaviour, handling, body language to tack, helpers, basically anything relevant to horses and photography. I highly recommend this Unit and look forward to the next one.

Katharina Movik (verified owner) – March 1, 2026 | Unit 5: Outdoor Portrait
I have just completed the EPC (unit 5 outdoor portrait), and I have learned so much, for example; safty, about posing horses, humans, about helpers, how to get the horses attention an so on. Jess is as always a brilliant teatcher, explaining all so it’s easy to learn and understand the theory. This course is full of information and I can’t wait to continue practising what I have learned. I would really recomend this course for anyone who wants to photograph horses outdoors.

Josee Lavoie (verified owner) – January 17, 2025 | Unit 1: Core
I’ve been improving my photography skills for a few years now using the courses Jess creates. This and other MTog learning content has been this single best investment for my photography career, hands down.
I’ve been wanting to try equine photography for a while, but not having a horse myself or much experience with them I was leery to try, and didn’t even know where to start. So far I’ve completed the EPC core module, and can attest that my knowledge of all things horse has grown exponenttially! This module contains terminology about horses and equipment, to a basic overview of horse behaviours, even how to approach a horse depeding on the situation. I feel so much more ready to start my equine photography adventure, and am looking forward to the shooting and editing modules!
Thank you again Jess and team for another well thought out, comprehensive and valuable learning resource.

Katharina Movik (verified owner) – December 30, 2025 | Unit 1: Core
The Unit 1 – Core EPC is an excellent foundationfor anyone who wants to get started in equine photography. It provides a well structured introduction that covers essential knowledge needed to work safely and professionally around horses, very well explained by Jess. She also gives a clear guidance on equipment and how to use it and what to be aware of before shooting. I can strongly recommend this to anyone who is going into equine photography.

I’ve already learned so much valuable information. My approach will now be more considered, I have a better understanding of ‘the why’ and the ‘what’ i will need to when developing my knowledge skills and experience. I can’t wait to dive into my first ‘specific’ module.

Sue Richardson (verified owner) – December 20, 2025 | Unit 1: Core, Unit 2: Black Background, Unit 3: Studio Photography, Unit 4: Event Photography and Unit 5: Outdoor Portrait
This was such an amazing course. So much to take with me when I go out to photograph horses in the spring (because frankly it’s too cold from December through March!).
I’ll have lots of time to review and get poses just right and thankfully have friends and family with horses that will happily let me practice with them.
Jess, I’m so glad that you included that last workflow in the Outdoor Portrait module. When I first saw that finished image I thought how gorgeous it was and now I’m looking forward to trying something similar.
Thank you again so much for this opportunity to learn with you!

Jodi Towne (verified owner) – December 13, 2025 | Unit 1: Core
I just completed the required Core module. It was very interesting, not boring at all. I am a horse owner, and although I knew most of what was being reviewed, it was helpful to hear this information in the context of horse photography. This was information I did not even know I needed!

Jackie Searies (verified owner) – December 7, 2025 | Unit 3: Studio Photography
I’ve just completed the Equine Studio course and all I can say is “wow”. I’ve done multiple studio courses with different people before, but it’s something about Jess’s teaching that just makes sense to my brain. Everything is explained so well, and so simply. I may have completed the course but I will definitely be referring back to it time and time again…… looking forward to moving on to the Equine outdoor portrait course now.

Yvonne Andersson (verified owner) – December 2, 2025 | Unit 1: Core
I have now completed Module 1 Core Module in Equine Photography and it was very informative and explanatory about what it is like to work with and around a horse. I particularly appreciate the part about safety, because I think it is a very important factor when dealing with horses. If you are not especially experienced with horses beforehand, it is very helpful that Jess goes through everything that the first module covers, and even if you have some knowledge about horses beforehand, there is so much else to consider before photographing that I got to learn in this module.

Philip Yale (verified owner) – November 30, 2025 | Unit 1: Core
This is going to be a very in-depth course, and so after a couple of days I’ve just completed module 1. So far, it has everything in it that I’ve come to expect from Jess’s training videos:
- Clarity
- Detailed content
- Impeccable production values
- Perfectly-paced delivery
Jess really knows her stuff, which is evident in the way she speaks to the viewer. There are no stumbles, no corrections, no long pauses to think of what to say … it’s very fluent yet at the same time very natural. This is not autocue – this is someone who is simply a natural communicator explaining things with admirable simplicity, and that makes it so watchable and so memorable.
I’ve already learnt a ton of detail about equine terminology that I simply didn’t know before, and I’ve also learned the answers to several aspects of equine photoshoot logistics that I’ve been looking for answers to for quite some time … and that’s all from the introductory module! If the remainder of this course continues in the same vein then it will absolutely have lived up to expectations.

Just wrapped up EPC Unit 1 – Core and wow… absolutely outstanding! Jess knocked it out of the park again. Every step is so organized, clear, and easy to follow.
I learned more in this single unit than I expected from an entire course. Whether you’re brand-new to equine photography or years into your journey, you’ll walk away with game-changing insights. Highly recommend!

Jess and Team-TTS have done it again! Another amazing course that leaves no stone unturned. The EPC is second to none and unlike anything that is offered at this point in time. Customizable, and incredibly thorough, this course is the gold standard for equine photography.
I cannot recommend enough for anyone to invest in themselves and business and take this course!

This unit has been so thoughtfully created and is packed full of everything you need to know before you get stuck in! Jess is so well versed in everything horses and it really shows! her ability to explain things in such a diplomatic way is truly impressive.
As a horse person myself I thought I might feel bored by some of the ‘basic information’ but needn’t have worried, there were plenty of little extra helpful nuggets of information that I have tucked away and I really enjoyed each topic.
